Vaidika narratives describing the origins of ganapati are deeply allegorical much like most other purāṇa-s. Ganapati is conceived as the progeny of śiva and pārvatī is the personification of the principle of bhūta-ākāśa or material space emerging from the association of tamasika ahaṅkāra principle within the aṇḍa-ākāśa – or the universal space.

In the Vedic tradition, Ganapati is worshipped as the devatā of beginnings and the remover of obstacles. Before starting any new venture or undertaking, Ganapati is involed to ensure its successful completion. Vedic rituals such as Ganapati homam (fire ritual) are performed to seek his blessings and guidance.
